Melrose and the Eildon Hills
Dryburgh Abbey, Tweed Valley

"My trips with Celtic Trails were a delight. Ms Queally is personable, enthusiastic and knowledgeable; her 'extra bits' on whatever site or locale we visited were an additional pleasure. Flexibility of the trips is another plus. An unplanned hour in a remote kirkyard with a local who knew (and told us of) the history of each grave was serendipity - typical of Celtic Trails, and a real treat."

Skeleton outline of tour (This does not cover all aspects)

The Border Abbey town of Melrose is steeped in monastic history and local fairy lore, and is a bustling small metropolis on our trail. Melrose Abbey hosts the burial site of Robert the Bruce's heart.

En route we visit the ancient hospice of Soutra that was a major point on an important path of pilgrimage in medieval times, linked to our destination area.

Travelling along the base of the magical Eildon Hills adjacent to Melrose , we visit a beautiful church in the lee of the hills, which seems to stem from an earlier Druid site of worship. Ceremonial worship of some sort would also have taken place on the Bronze Age hill fort above on Eildon Hill North. It is one of the longest inhabited sites of its kind in Scotland .

The Eildon Hills themselves lend a definite grace and charm, as encountered in their "fairy spots", such as dells and trees that are pointed out by your guide. "Druid Thomas" regularly walked the Eildon Hills before meeting the Faery Queen and disappearing into Fairyland!

The favourite abbey for many who visit the Border Abbeys, Dryburgh Abbey on the wooded banks of the ancient Tweed is a must to see! Sir Walter Scott is buried here.
